In brief: Brazil’s primary deficit widens

* Brazil’s economy ministry has announced that the central government posted a R$39.4bn (US$7.6bn) primary deficit in May, significantly exceeding its expectations of a R$23.1bn deficit. In May, the central government spent R$47.0bn on social security, while the treasury and the central bank recorded a combined surplus of R$7.6bn. The latest figures contrast with a R$21.0bn primary deficit in May 2021. Government spending on social security has significantly increased in recent months with the extension of the Auxílio Brasil cash transfer programme.
