Wounded Lasso escapes impeachment but protests persist

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso narrowly survived an impeachment attempt on 28 June after opposition legislators accused his government of mishandling social protests that have raged for over two weeks. The nationwide protests, spearheaded by the country’s indigenous movement, have descended into violence, leading to fatalities. A dialogue process is underway but mutual distrust runs deep and it has broken down once already.
