BRAZIL: Amazon murders shine a light on region’s challenges

The disappearance and murder of Dom Phillips, a British journalist, and Bruno Araújo Pereira, a Brazilian indigenous expert, in a remote area of the Brazilian Amazon in early June shocked the country and reverberated well beyond its borders. If any good can be said to have come of the two men’s brutal deaths, it is that they are helping shine a light on the criminal dynamics at play in the Amazon and the consequences of the dismantling of environmental and indigenous safeguards under President Jair Bolsonaro.
