*Mexico’s tax authority (SAT) has announced that tax collection between January and June 2022 amounted to M$2.49trn (US$122bn), a 2.7% increase on the same period in 2021 and an 8.6% increase on the same period of 2018, when former president
Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) was in office. SAT head
Raquel Buenrostro, who presented the figures during a press conference, stated that tax collection had already exceeded levels registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and had not dropped despite the war in Ukraine. Buenrostro attributed the increases primarily to clamping down on tax evasion by large taxpayers, saying the amount collected from such taxpayers between January and June 2022 was 20.7% higher than in the same period of 2021, equating to M$1.1bn in real terms.
