Laurentino Cortizo has announced the establishment of a high-level dialogue in Santiago city, Veraguas province to address the demands of teachers who have been protesting over the high cost of living. The government delegation will be headed up by education minister,
Maruja Gorday de Villalobos, and will include representatives from the ministries of finance & economy and the ombudsman’s office, among other institutions. Teachers will be represented by unions such as Asociación de Educadores Veragüenses, Asociación de Maestros Independientes Auténticos and Asociación de Educadores Chiricanos. Protests have also taken place in other provinces such as Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí and Panamá Oeste. These demands come as year-on-year inflation in Panama was running at 4.2% in May, up from 3.7% in April and 1.9% in May 2021 and despite recent measures by President Cortizo to address the cost of living such as a freeze on the cost of fuel at US$3.95 per gallon for certain sectors.
