COLOMBIA: Petro forges formidable coalition

The grand national accord he vowed to forge is taking shape faster than Colombia’s president-elect Gustavo Petro could ever have imagined. All of a sudden from looking like having a decent-sized minority bench Petro now looks set to enjoy a decisive majority in both chambers of congress when he takes office on 7 August. Several traditional parties, won over by his conciliatory rhetoric and opening gestures, are promising to work with his left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition in congress. Keeping such a disparate force together will require some political dexterity but early cabinet choices augur well for Petro’s chances at the outset.
