NICARAGUA: Ortega deals further blow to municipal autonomy
With less than four months until the 6 November 2022 municipal elections, President Daniel Ortega’s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) has seized control of five mayoralties won in the previous (2017) municipal vote by the opposition party Ciudadanos por la Libertad (CxL), which was stripped of its legal status last year ahead of the November 2021 general election. Civil society groups are denouncing the takeovers as the latest blow to democracy following last year’s election which produced a re-election victory for Ortega but was widely slammed as a sham amid a crackdown on the opposition and dismantling of democratic institutions.
