Congress closes in on Castillo

Peru’s President Pedro Castillo has named his sixth interior minister since taking office just under a year ago. Castillo appointed Mariano González, a lawyer and former deputy in the Andean parliament, on 4 July after congress voted to censure the previous incumbent, Dimitri Senmache. González has briefly held a cabinet position before. He resigned as defence minister during the ill-fated presidency of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018) after just four months when he was exposed as having an affair with his adviser. At the current turnover rate, González will be doing well if he lasts longer in his present post.
