In brief: Remittances surge in Guatemala

*Guatemala’s central bank (Banguat) has released new figures which show that remittances to the country totalled US$1.67bn in June 2022, a monthly record. This brings the total for the first six months to US$8.71bn. The June 2022 figure compares with US$1.36bn registered in the same month in 2021 while the figure for the first six months is up from US$6.97bn registered in the same period in 2021. Remittances to Guatemala totalled US$15.29bn in 2021, accounting for 17.8% of GDP last year on estimates from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
