Jair Bolsonaro has said his government is close to agreeing a deal to receive cheap diesel from Russia.
“I’ll likely buy cheaper diesel from Russia,” the president told supporters on 11 July as he left the presidential palace in Brasilia, adding that petrol prices were also falling after most state governors agreed
to reduce taxes on fuel.
“Everything is going well in Brazil,” he said. High fuel prices have hurt Bolsonaro’s re-election hopes ahead of the 2 October general election. He is currently trailing in polls behind former leftist president
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011). Bolsonaro, who met with Russia’s President
Vladimir Putin days before the outbreak of war, has refused to condemn Russia for invading Ukraine, putting him at odds with much of the international community in Latin America and in the West.
