BRAZIL: Election dynamics fuel Amazon destruction

A decade ago the most dire warnings from scientists over the future of the Amazon hit the mainstream news. The world’s largest rainforest may be approaching a tipping point after which its ability to regenerate itself is permanently damaged, they said. Since then deforestation in the Amazon has increased continuously, and government data released this week showed yet another unenviable record of destruction.
