MEXICO: Church ups criticism of security strategy

The Catholic Church has been piling pressure on the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to put an end to rising levels of violence. In particular, the Church has criticised López Obrador’s ‘hugs not bullets’ security strategy and called for the development of a more effective approach. In a recent statement, Catholic bishops urged that dialogue be established between the authorities and civil society, saying that all opinions must be heard – including those of criminals - to find a successful strategy for achieving peace.
