Uruguay’s government confronts strike and Covid ruling

Uruguay’s government led by President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou faced two challenges this week. The first was anticipated: a general strike by the umbrella trade union Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT). The second caught the government off guard: a court order preventing coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccinations from being administered to children. Lacalle Pou was more exercised by the latter, questioning judicial competence in the matter and promising to appeal.
