COLOMBIA: Petro sends message with US ambassadorial pick

Colombia’s president-elect Gustavo Petro sent a clear signal of the direction in which he wants to steer bilateral relations with the US this week by naming Luis Gilberto Murillo as ambassador to Washington. Murillo served as environment minister for two years at the tail end of the second administration of Juan Manuel Santos (2016-2018). US President Joe Biden shares Petro’s concerns about climate change and protection of the environment, as well as the need for an energy transition, so there is scope for close cooperation on these issues. Security, the traditional focus of bilateral relations, will be a thornier issue.
