PERU: Castillo’s family embroiled in corruption

The corruption allegations swirling around Peru’s President Pedro Castillo have now engulfed First Lady Lilia Paredes and her sister Yenifer Paredes. Castillo has also been accused of attempting to intimidate the press after members of the ‘rondas campesinas’ rural citizens’ militias in his native region of Cajamarca, in north-eastern Peru, seized two journalists covering the story and coerced them into reading a statement apologising for having made false accusations against the president and his relatives. In a related twist, the armed forces issued a statement condemning comments by the prime minister, who had decided to praise the efforts of ronderos to combat crime in Peru and expressed his desire for the military to emulate their actions.
