López Obrador meets Biden

Mexico: On 12 July Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met US President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. The two made a string of commitments spanning trade, security, and climate change. These included the commitment to implement the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement on regional trade, including by “fully upholding its labour provisions”, and border investment (the US administration has committed US$3.4bn whereas Mexico will invest US$1.5bn in border infrastructure between 2022 and 2024). The two also committed to “investing in and promoting renewable sources of energy”. López Obrador’s energy policy continues to prioritise state-owned electricity firm, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), which has historically preferred electricity generation from fossil fuels. As regards security, the two governments pledged to continue working together under the Bicentennial Framework for Security, Public Health and Safe Communities. Much of what was discussed, particularly around trade, will be expanded upon during the next US-Mexico High Level Economic Dialogue (HLED), scheduled to take place in September, and the North American Leaders’ Summit (NALS), which will take place in Mexico at the end of the year.
