In brief: Argentina calls for Mercosur to analyse Uruguay-China FTA study

* Argentina’s foreign ministry has said that the preliminary feasibility study completed by Uruguay ahead of the launch of its negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) with China must be analysed “by all member countries” of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc which comprises Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. This follows the announcement last week by Uruguay’s President Luis Lacalle Pou that the feasibility study had been completed and that formal negotiations over the FTA were set to begin. Argentina’s demands come just days before a heads-of-state summit of Mercosur is scheduled to take place in Paraguay’s capital, Asunción, on 21 July where Paraguay will hand over the rotating presidency to Uruguay.
