*Cuba’s energy & mining minister, Liván Arronte Cruz, has warned that the “operating reserves that we have in the electrical system are insufficient to cover demand, making effects on service inevitable”. He also said that the solution is “not immediate”, suggesting there is no end in sight to the blackouts which have been affecting the island in recent months which stem in large part from the poor condition of Cuba’s power plants. Cuba has eight thermoelectric plants with 20 generating blocks, which provide 65% of the energy consumed on the island. However, the latest update yesterday from the mining & energy ministry (Minem) highlighted that 16 of the generating blocks were out of action due to maintenance while a fire at the Felton power station which is located in Holguín province has also had an impact. Frustration over the blackouts was a driving factor in the unprecedented July 2021 anti-government protests which stemmed from economic, political and health-related grievances.
