In brief: Chile’s finance minister affirms foreign investment interest

* Chile’s finance minister, Mario Marcel, has stated that there continues to be a lot of interest in foreign investment in Chile, given the commitment of the government led by President Gabriel Boric to an “open and competitive economy” and bringing investors into new areas such as the green economy. Marcel was speaking after heading up the Chilean delegation at Chile Day, an event held in New York to showcase Chile’s position as a destination for investment and exporter of financial services. The visit took place as Chile is facing a weakening peso, stagnating economy and annual inflation of 12.5%. During his visit, Marcel also stated that Chile would have a new constitution, saying that this was “something we can bet on with great certainty” no matter the result of the referendum on 4 September. Polls conducted in recent weeks have shown that the public is likely to reject the draft constitution drawn up by the constitutional convention (CC). If this happens, said Marcel, modifications would be made, or a new proposal drawn up.
