* Mexico’s President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador has declared the Tren Maya railway line infrastructure project on the Yucatán peninsula a work of “
national security”. This is in line with a
controversial decree issued in November 2021 which declared state infrastructure projects a matter of national security, and subjected the government to accusations of authoritarianism and unconstitutional behaviour. His comments come as the Mexican branch of international NGO Greenpeace
recently announced protests against the resumption of infrastructural works on section five of the Tren Maya despite
this having been suspended by a district judge in Yucatán state back in May. In a press conference yesterday, President López Obrador complained that the State has lost “
a considerable amount” of the “
people’s money” because of the “
pseudo-environmentalists” obstructing construction.
