ECUADOR: Conaie extracts concessions on loans and debt

President Guillermo Lasso is having to get used to a new political reality. Whilst he was always going to face stiff opposition in his efforts to liberalise Ecuador’s statist economy, his economic agenda is now hostage to the demands of the indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie). Having agreed to enter dialogue with Conaie to bring an end to nearly three weeks of serious civil unrest in June, Lasso will be forced to compromise on many of his key objectives. On 18 July, a tranche of announcements on loans and personal debt demonstrated the influence that the indigenous organisation now exerts over government policy.
