COLOMBIA: Another hammer blow to Farc dissidents

Dissident forces of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group have come under sustained pressure over the past year, losing a string of top-level commanders. Defence Minister Diego Molano Aponte announced another significant blow on 15 July, stating that Néstor Gregorio Vera Fernández (‘Iván Mordisco’), the leader of a nationwide alliance of dissident Farc units, had been killed in an airstrike in the southern department of Caquetá. Mordisco’s apparent death came just two months after that of his predecessor, Miguel Botache Santillana (‘Gentil Duarte’).
