In brief: Argentina’s new economy minister meets IMF head

*Argentina’s newly appointed economy minister, Silvina Batakis, has met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington. On Twitter, Georgieva said the meeting with Batakis, who has been in the role since the resignation of Martín Guzmán on 2 July, had been “productive”. Georgieva commended Batakis’s “initial efforts to strengthen fiscal sustainability” and said they had agreed on the importance of “decisive” implementation of the IMF’s economic programme for Argentina. In her first official activity to Washington, Batakis also met with US officials including the senior advisor to US Treasury Secretary, David Lipton and US Treasury Assistant Secretary for International Markets Michael Kaplan, as well as managing director of operations for the World Bank (WB), Axel van Trotsenburg, who informed her of the WB’s decision to approve a new US$200m loan for Argentina to promote sustainable growth in the country, with a focus on technological innovation.
