MEXICO: Former Veracruz attorney general arrested

Jorge Winckler, the former attorney general of Veracruz state (2016-2019), was arrested on 25 July after almost three years on the run, accused of kidnap and forced disappearance. The arrest is a boon for the Veracruz state government, led by governor Cuitláhuac García of the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), who frequently clashed with Winckler during the short time their terms coincided. The case also serves as a reminder of the turbulence that the eastern state of Veracruz has faced in recent years, with subsequent attorneys general and governors falling foul of the law – and of each other.
