MEXICO: Congress discusses potential electoral reform

Mexico’s congress began discussing proposals to reform the electoral system on 26 July. Almost 50 reform initiatives will be analysed over the coming month, including those presented by individual deputies and whole parties, as well as that of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador himself. On announcing the open congressional sessions, the president of the federal chamber of deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna of the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), stressed that opinions from all political factions would be heard. The political opposition, however, does not seem convinced.
