Major changes in Colombian security policy expected under Petro

Colombia is set for major change following Gustavo Petro’s victory in the 19 June presidential run-off. Petro, of the left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition, has pledged a rethink of Colombia’s security policy, promising to fully implement the 2016 peace accords with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group and expressing confidence that he can strike a similar deal with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN). Sweeping changes to drug policy and environmental regulations are potentially also on the cards, but Petro may see some of his more radical proposals watered down by his broad coalition in congress, which includes the establishment Partido Liberal and the centre-right Partido de la U.
