MEXICO: Under-resourced police forces face growing risks

State security forces in Nuevo León were conducting surveillance work near the state’s border with the US on 26 June, when a heavily armed group ambushed them. The ensuing clash resulted in the deaths of six police officers. This came just days after four municipal officers were killed while attending to a report of a kidnapping in El Salto municipality, Jalisco state and a week before three other municipal officers were murdered in San Francisco del Mar municipality in Oaxaca state, and their patrol vehicle incinerated. These incidents form part of a larger trend in Mexico, which has seen members of security forces – particularly those belonging to local units – increasingly coming under attack from drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) and other criminal groups who often have the upper hand in terms of manpower and resources.
