In brief: Unemployment falls in Chile

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest employment figures, showing that unemployment stood at 7.8% during the April-June 2022 rolling quarter. This represents a decrease of 1.7 percentage points year-on-year. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.6%, which implied no variation with respect to the previous rolling quarter. According to the national employment survey (ENE) conducted by INE, the fall in unemployment over the past year is explained by the growth of the labour force (+7.9%) being less than the increase in employed persons (+9.9%). By sector, the increase in the employed population was driven by commerce, which was up 11.8% year-on-year, followed by households as employers (+37.3%), and accommodation and food services (22%). According to INE, the informal employment rate stands at 27.1%, a yearly increase of 1.1%.
