Sweeteners: The ruling by the World Trade Organization in favour of the US in the dispute with Mexico over different taxes for soft drinks according to the sweetener used is pushing the government towards a bilateral negotiation. Since 2002, Mexico has been taxing softdrinks not sweetened with sugar at 20%: those using sugar do not pay any similar taxes. The US argued that this tax penalised its farmers and agribusiness which produce and export high-fructose corn syrup. Mexico is one of the world's biggest markets for soft drinks. The US first complained to the WTO about the 20% tax in June 2004.
