In brief: DR claims new monthly record for tourists

*The Dominican Republic’s tourism minister, David Collado has said that the country received a record number of tourists in July. According to a statement by the office of President Luis Abinader, 735,064 foreign tourists visited the country in July – the highest number for any month. It notes that the figure for July 2022 was 10% up on July 2018, 24% up on July 2019 and 30% up on the same month in 2021 but did not give the figure for July 2020 when the tourism industry had ground to a halt due to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The statement also explained that the record-breaking arrivals has already had a “direct impact” on the economy, with US$931m in foreign exchange earnings in July. A central bank (BCRD) statement notes that in the first half of 2022, tourism revenue totalled US$4.12bn, up 92.5% year-on-year which it described as a “clear indicator” of recovery. The United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has recognised the Dominican tourism industry as having had an “outstanding” performance since the outbreak of the pandemic, contributing to the economy achieving pre-pandemic growth in 2021. The statement by the office for the presidency said that this year it expects over 7m tourists to have visited the Dominican Republic – the highest number in the country’s history.
