Ítalo Cedeño, the director of Ecuador’s state-owned oil company Petroecuador, has announced his resignation, one day after President
Guillermo Lasso called on the company’s executive board to remove him. Lasso’s move against Cedeño followed allegations in the local media that Cedeño’s wife had improperly advised him on key staff appointments. Announcing his resignation, Cedeño acknowledged that
“in the first month, my wife had influence… advising at home on which people are honest and which are corrupt.” He challenged his critics to lodge a formal complaint with the attorney general’s office if they could find any irregularities in his staff appointments or any sign of bribery or influence peddling. Cedeño’s replacement is expected to be named in the coming days.
