PERU: Storm clouds ahead as Castillo marks his first year in office

It didn't augur well. In a state of the nation speech to congress on 28 July President Pedro Castillo said he had been “slapped in the face” by his opponents, but rather than presenting the other cheek he would offer a handshake to “work together for the people”. At this point he was drowned out by shouts of ‘renunciá, corrupto’ (resign, corrupt person) and ‘fuera, fuera’ (out, out). Some right-wing opposition deputies picked the moment to walk out of the lower chamber.
