In brief: Tourist flights return to Chile’s Easter Island

*Chile-headquartered Latam Airlines has resumed regular passenger flights to Chile’s Easter Island following a 27-month suspension due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Latam will be the only airline to operate flights to the island, with the first planeload of tourists touching down on 4 August. Arrivals must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and show a negative PCR test. The island’s reopening will be gradual, with two flights a week from Santiago in August, three a week in September and seven a week from October. Prior to the pandemic, tourism served as a main source of revenue for Easter Island, with mayor Pedro Pablo Petero Edmunds Paoa telling newswire EFE that 82% of the island’s population – which numbers around 8,000 - depended on tourism.
