Mexico’s Jalisco exports first avocado shipment to US

Mexico: On 28 July, Mexico’s state of Jalisco exported its first shipment of Hass avocados to the US. The move follows the announcement last month by Mexican authorities that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) had formally authorised the entry of Jalisco avocados following the inspection and certification of more than 8,000 hectares of avocados in over 600 orchards. Mexico’s federal agriculture minister, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, said that the agreement will create over 12,000 jobs directly and 22,000 indirectly. US ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, also lauded the first shipment of 220 tonnes of avocados as “great news”. After ten years of attempts, Jalisco now becomes the second Mexican state, along with Michoacán, to export avocados to the US. According to the US embassy, Mexico exported a record US$2.8bn worth of avocadoes to the US in 2021.
