MEXICO: National guard debate intensifies

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has declared he will place the national guard (GN) under the control of the defence ministry (Sedena) before the end of his term, regardless of the result of a constitutional reform on the matter. Speaking in a press conference on 8 August, López Obrador said he could bring the supposedly civilian force, which currently sits within the public security ministry (SSPC), under the complete control of the armed forces by issuing a decree or amending the public administration law, if his public security reform fails to pass in congress. The declaration was yet another example of López Obrador’s determination to move on several controversial core priorities before leaving office in December 2024.
