GUATEMALA: Giammattei expands efforts to silence critics

A Guatemalan judge ruled on 9 August that prosecutors had sufficient evidence to prosecute a prominent critic of President Alejandro Giammattei, the respected and award-winning journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, the founder and owner of the national daily elPeriódico, for money laundering, blackmail, and influence peddling. On the same day various civil society groups organised protests in departments across Guatemala against government corruption, as well as the high cost of living.
