In brief: Panama private sector urges delay to medicine price cuts

* Panama’s leading business lobby Cámara de Comercio, Industrias y Agricultura de Panamá (CCIAP) has issued a statement calling for the postponement of an executive decree issued on 10 August by President Laurentino Cortizo which reduces the prices of 170 medicines by 30%. The decree, which also introduces a 20% discount for pensioners, was announced by President Cortizo as part of the ongoing dialogue process with protest groups as part of efforts to end what became the biggest protests to rock the country in recent years over soaring living costs. CCIAP warns that there is no clarity as to how these changes will apply within the supply chain, given that pharmacies cannot apply the measures themselves and distributors have not received concrete answers from the pharmaceutical laboratories with which they trade.
