* The Companhia Nacional do Abastecimento (Conab), the logistics arm of Brazil’s agriculture ministry, has announced that it expects the 2022/2023 sugar cane harvest to fall by 1% compared to the 2021/2022 harvest. Predicting that sugar cane production will total 572.9m tonnes (t), Conab nevertheless noted that the crop is “beginning to show recovery, after two cycles of adverse weather.” It stated that this year’s sugar cane harvest is expected to produce 33.9m t of sugar (down 3% year-on-year) and 25.83bn litres of ethanol (down 2.2%). Conab noted that the reduced production of sugar-derived ethanol will be compensated by a 30% increase in the production of corn-derived ethanol, which is forecast to total 4.5bn litres.
