* El Salvador’s central bank (BCR) has released new figures which show that family remittances sent to El Salvador in the first seven months of 2022 totalled US$4.42bn, up 3.3% on the same period in 2021. Of the total, US$4.14bn were sent from the US, followed by Canada (US$38.6m); Spain (US$16.4m); Italy (US$13.3m); and the UK (US$6.5m). As regards how they were sent, 34.4% were sent via banking institutions; while other institutions used for the payment of remittances represented 62.0% of the total. Digital transactions through cryptocurrency accounted for 1.7% of the total while transactions through mobile telephones accounted for 0.3%.
