In brief: Mexico hails rise in FDI

* Mexico’s economy ministry has released preliminary figures which show that Mexico attracted US$27.5bn in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first six months of 2022, up 12% on the same period in 2021. According to the economy ministry, the merger of multimedia company Televisa with network Univisión and the restructuring of the Mexican airline Aeroméxico accounted for US$6.88bn of FDI alone. According to same report, manufacturing accounted for 34.3% of FDI in the first half of 2022, followed by transport (16.3%), mass media (14.2%), financial and insurance services (13%), and trade (6.1%). As regards the origin of investment flows, the US was the biggest investor in Mexico, accounting for 39.9% of FDI in 2022, followed by Canada (10.3%), Spain (6.8%), Argentina (5.9%), the UK (3.3%), and Germany (2.6%).
