* The frontrunner for Brazil’s October presidential election, former leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011), has said that he would seek to “adjust” the unratified trade agreement between the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and the European Union (EU). “This sort of agreement has to be a win-win thing,” he said, saying there was “no need to rush” into implementing the agreement. “What we want is to sit down with the EU and discuss, with regards to the EU’s needs and ours, the rights that each of us have. What we want in our discussion with Europe is to not give up on our desire to reindustrialise.” The EU-Mercosur agreement was completed in 2019 after two decades of talks, but several European governments have refused to ratify it over concerns about mounting deforestation in Brazil under President Jair Bolsonaro.
