CHILE: Police reform on the table

The question of police reform has been floated in Chile for a while, but the 2019 social uprising pushed it up the list of priorities. Despite some attempts by former president Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014; 2018-2022) to introduce changes, little progress was made, and it has now befallen the young administration of Gabriel Boric to work towards a sweeping reform of Chile’s police forces – notably the militarised Carabineros, who have been accused of human rights violations.
