GUATEMALA: Targeting another sector

The government led by President Alejandro Giammattei has hitherto faced particular criticism over its attacks on independent judicial operators and prosecutors, amid concerns regarding a more general backsliding in democracy under Guatemala’s discredited head of the attorney general’s office (AG) María Consuelo Porras [SSR-22-07]. The arrest of one of the country’s most well-known journalists, José Rubén Zamora, the founder and president of national daily elPeriódico, is stoking fears that efforts to silence government critics are being extended to the media.
