In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate declines

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released figures from its July 2022 national employment survey (Enoe) that show a year-on-year decrease in the level of unemployment. The total number of unemployed people in July 2022 stood at 2.2m people, or 3.4% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment. This represents a decrease of 542,000 people from July 2021. In monthly terms, the rate of unemployment in July decreased by 0.1 percentage points. According to Inegi, the economically active population totalled 59.5m in July 2022. Inegi also cited a monthly decrease in number of underemployed people – workers who need more hours – by 0.7 percentage points.
