In brief: Colombia to return disputed state company to Venezuela’s Maduro

* Colombia’s new ambassador in Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, has said that control over the Colombia-based Venezuelan state petrochemicals company Monómeros will be handed to the Venezuelan government led by President Nicolás Maduro. Monómeros has been under the control of a board appointed by Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó since 2019, when Colombia’s former president Iván Duque (2018-2022) recognised him as Venezuela’s legitimate president. In an interview with Spanish newswire EFE, Benedetti said that Colombia’s new President Gustavo Petro “recognises Maduro, recognises that the owner [of Monómeros] is the Venezuelan government.” He said that this “has caused some complications with the US,” but that Petro “always told the US… that Monómeros will be returned to Venezuela, in line with our regulations.”
