*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest employment figures, showing that unemployment stood at 9.1% in the rolling quarter ending in July. This represents a decrease of 1.4 percentage points on the preceding rolling quarter (February-April), and of 4.6 percentage points year-on-year. The rate is the lowest since the rolling quarter ending in December 2015, when unemployment also stood at 9.1%. “

Adriana Beringuy, Ibge research coordinator, noted. Some 9.9m people are unemployed in Brazil, the lowest number since January 2016. Underemployment declined to 20.9% – down 1.6 percentage points on the previous rolling quarter, and down seven percentage points year-on-year. The informality rate also dropped, standing at 39.8% – down 0.2 percentage points on the previous quarter.
