*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest employment figures, showing that unemployment stood at 9.1% in the rolling quarter ending in July. This represents a decrease of 1.4 percentage points on the preceding rolling quarter (February-April), and of 4.6 percentage points year-on-year. The rate is the lowest since the rolling quarter ending in December 2015, when unemployment also stood at 9.1%. “We can observe the continuation of a trend of growth in occupation and significant drop in the unemployment rate,” Adriana Beringuy, Ibge research coordinator, noted. Some 9.9m people are unemployed in Brazil, the lowest number since January 2016. Underemployment declined to 20.9% – down 1.6 percentage points on the previous rolling quarter, and down seven percentage points year-on-year. The informality rate also dropped, standing at 39.8% – down 0.2 percentage points on the previous quarter.
