In brief: Costa Rica hails first pineapple shipment to Israel

* Costa Rica’s foreign trade (Comex) minister Manuel Tovar Rivera has hailed the first shipment of pineapples to Israel. In February the two countries announced the signing of a bilateral agreement which will permit Costa Rica to export fresh pineapples, one of the country’s leading agricultural exports, to Israel. According to a government press release at the time, the two countries had been exchanging information regarding the issue since 2017, while in 2019 Israeli phytosanitary authorities visited various pineapple production sites in Costa Rica to verify production conditions, among other things. Tovar made the latest announcement during a trip to Israel where he is leading a delegation comprising representatives of Costa Rica’s investment promotion agency, Agencia Costarricense de Promoción de Inversiones (Cinde), and export promotion agency (Procomer). According to a Comex press release the trip is aimed at strengthening trade and investment ties between both countries and promoting Costa Rica as a “strategic partner” in areas such as innovation, technology, cybersecurity and agro-technology.
