In brief: Household debt hits record levels in Brazil

*The Confederação Nacional do Comércio de Bens, Serviços e Turismo (CNC), a private sector lobby group in Brazil, has reported that the share of Brazilian families facing indebtedness reached record levels in August. Last month, 79% of surveyed families were in debt, up from 78% in July and 72.9% in August 2021. This is the highest percentage since CNC started to calculate the indebtedness index, in 2010. Before July 2021, the percentage of Brazilian families in debt had never exceeded 70%. Last month, the share of surveyed households reporting having bills or debts overdue also rose to 29.6%, up from 29% in July and 25.6% a year ago. The percentage of those who have debts and do not believe they will be able to settle them reached 10.8% in August, up from 10.7% both in July 2022 and August 2021.
