ARGENTINA: Fernández survives assassination attempt

Vice President Cristina Fernández narrowly survived an attempt on her life on 1 September. As she was returning home to her apartment in Recoleta in the northern part of Buenos Aires, where supporters have been gathering every evening since 22 August, the date when a federal prosecutor requested a 12-year prison sentence for her on corruption charges [WR-22-35], a man approached Fernández, produced a semi-automatic pistol, and pulled the trigger at close range. The weapon failed to discharge. The entire political class united to condemn the attempted assassination, but customary divisions swiftly resumed after the government sought to blame the opposition, judiciary, and the media for stirring up hate speech.
