ARGENTINA: Fernández survives assassination attempt

Vice President Cristina Fernández narrowly survived an attempt on her life on 1 September. As she was returning home to her apartment in Recoleta in the northern part of Buenos Aires, where supporters have been gathering every evening since 22 August, the date when a federal prosecutor requested a 12-year prison sentence for her on corruption charges [WR-22-35], a man approached Fernández, produced a semi-automatic pistol, and pulled the trigger at close range. The weapon failed to discharge.
