MEXICO: Opposition unravels over national guard militarisation

The militarisation of public security, long a source of contention between the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party and its opponents, is now causing significant divisions within the opposition Va por México alliance itself. Opposition deputies united in rejection of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s national guard (GN) reform on 3 September, which nevertheless gained the simple majority needed to pass. However, a separate proposal presented by deputies belonging to the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) on the matter has sent the Va por México coalition into disarray.
